Across the 374,596 fixtures in our database, 49.8% of football matches have gone over 2.5 goals.
That gives us a useful overall benchmark, but the picture changes quite a bit once you start comparing different leagues.
Some competitions produce three or more goals far more often than others, while plenty of matches only just clear the Over 2.5 line with exactly three goals.
At Goal Profits, we use Team Stats to dig into those patterns when researching potential trades.
In this article, I’ll look at the overall Over 2.5 percentage, exact goal totals and the leagues with the highest and lowest figures.
How common is Over 2.5 Goals?
49.8% of matches over the past decade have gone over 2.5 goals, so the market landed in almost half of all fixtures.
The average number of goals is 2.66 per match.
Here’s how Over 2.5 compares with the other main full-time goal lines:
Total Goals | Percentage of matches |
|---|---|
Over 0.5 goals | 92.1% |
Over 1.5 goals | 73.9% |
Over 2.5 goals | 49.8% |
Over 3.5 goals | 28.0% |
How often are there three-goal matches?
One thing worth looking at separately is how often a match lands just over the line.
21.8% of matches in our database finished with exactly three goals, meaning Over 2.5 landed without the match becoming particularly high scoring.
The four scorelines that make up that figure are:
Score | Percentage of matches |
|---|---|
2-1 | 8.8% |
1-2 | 6.8% |
3-0 | 4.0% |
0-3 | 2.2% |
Of those, 2-1 is comfortably the most common, accounting for almost one in every eleven matches in the database.
Over 2.5 Goals by league
The overall figure is close to 50%, but there can be a much bigger difference when you compare individual leagues.

8. | Switzerland Challenge League | 62% |
9. | Denmark Superliga | 61% |
10. | England National League North | 61% |
At the other end, these were the ten leagues with the lowest Over 2.5 Goals percentages:

7. | Japan J League | 45% |
8. | Japan J2 League | 45% |
9. | Portugal Liga 2 | 45% |
10. | Scotland Championship | 45% |
There was a big gap between the two ends of the table. 73% of Singapore Premier League matches went Over 2.5 Goals, compared with just 34% in the Egyptian Premier League.
Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland also each had two leagues inside the top ten.
This is where Team Stats Trends comes in particularly handy, as you can compare leagues and narrow down your trading shortlist quickly.
Over 2.5 Goals stats for football trading
The overall percentages are useful for context, but the real value comes from narrowing things down to individual leagues and teams.
